Psilocybin is sensitive to three things: heat, light, and oxygen. With basic storage discipline, dried mushrooms retain 90 percent of labelled potency for 12 months and can be pushed past 24 months without measurable loss. This guide is the practical storage manual for every format we sell.
Dried mushrooms
Vacuum-sealed mylar pouches stored at room temperature in a dark cupboard retain 90 percent of labelled potency for 12 months from the pack date printed on the seal. Once opened, transfer the contents to a glass Mason jar with a food-grade 100 cc oxygen absorber packet for storage past 12 months. Sealed and oxygen-absorbed jars retain effectively full potency for 24+ months.
Do NOT refrigerate dried mushrooms. The temperature cycling between fridge and counter introduces condensation that accelerates moisture migration into the product, which in turn accelerates psilocybin oxidation. Freezing is acceptable for very long-term storage but unnecessary for any normal household.
Chocolate bars and bites
Store at a steady 18 to 20 degrees C in the original wrapper inside a sealed container. Avoid refrigeration — the temperature cycling produces "fat bloom," a harmless but unsightly white surface haze. If your home runs hot in summer, transfer bars to a cool basement or wine fridge set to 14 degrees C. Stored correctly, every bar retains full labelled potency for 12 months from the print date. Past 12 months, expect a gradual 10 to 15 percent potency decline per additional year.
Gummies
Pectin gummies are more sensitive to humidity than chocolate or dried mushrooms. Keep them in the original resealable mylar pouch and add a small food-grade silica gel packet if you live in a humid coastal climate. Avoid refrigeration — temperature cycling causes sugar to recrystallise on the surface as a white bloom. Stored correctly at 18 to 22 degrees C in a dry cupboard, gummies retain full labelled potency for 9 to 12 months. Gelatin-based gummies last slightly longer (12 to 18 months) than pectin.
Capsules
Pre-filled capsules retain full potency for 12 months in the original sealed jar at room temperature in a dark cupboard. Once opened, the jar is exposed to slow oxygen ingress; finish an open jar within 6 months for full potency. Refrigeration is acceptable for capsules (no fat-bloom issue) but unnecessary.
Beverages
Sealed dry tea sachets and instant-coffee sticks retain full potency for 12 months at room temperature in a dark cupboard. Brewed tea should be consumed immediately or refrigerated and consumed within 24 hours. Ready-to-drink tonics (in sealed bottles) should be refrigerated and consumed within 7 days of opening.
Elixirs
Amber glass tincture bottles retain full potency for 18 months at room temperature in a dark cupboard — the longest shelf life of any format we sell, thanks to the alcohol or glycerin carrier. Refrigeration is optional and does not meaningfully extend shelf life. Store upright to keep the dropper functional.
What about freezing?
Freezing dried mushrooms is the most aggressive long-term storage option. A vacuum-sealed pouch placed in a deep freezer (below minus 18 degrees C) retains effectively full potency for 36+ months. The downside is condensation on thaw — pull the pouch out 2 hours before opening and let it come to room temperature inside the sealed bag to avoid moisture migration.
How to detect degraded product
Three signs. Visual: blue-black bruising on dried stems or pronounced surface discolouration on capsule powder indicates oxidised psilocybin. Olfactory: a sour, ammonia-like note (rather than the normal earthy mushroom aroma) indicates microbial degradation. Subjective: a dose that produces noticeably weaker effects than a previous identical dose from the same batch is the clearest sign of potency loss.
